Saskatoon berry is in the rose or Rosaceae family and is native from western Canada to the western and north-central United States. It is a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree, being a common understory in forests and reaching up to 5 m tall.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, darker green, finely toothed above the middle, oval to nearly circular, up to 5 cm long with petioles up 2 cm long.
  • Flowers are white, 5-petaled with strap-like petals up to 2.5 cm long, in compact clusters on short racemes of 3 to 20 flowers.
  • Fruit is a small, round, edible berry (pome) up to 1.3 cm in diameter, reddish but ripening to dark purplish-black in mid-summer, resembling blueberries in size, color and taste.
