Corkscrew willow is in the willow or Salicaceae family and is native to China and northeast Asia. It can grow up to 15 m tall. The 'Tortuosa' cultivar is often called dragon's claw willow.

Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa' is synonymous with and sometimes sold as Salix babylonica var. pekinensis 'Tortuosa'.

  • Leaves are lanciolate, up to 10 cm long, curled and twisted; they are bright green above and whitish-green below, turning golden yellow in the fall.
  • Flowers are non-showy, in yellowish green catkins that appear in May.
  • Branches also are twisted and contorted.
