Japanese flowering crab speciesThe Japanese flowering crabapple is in the rose or Rosaceae family and originates from Japan and East Asia. It reaches about 8 m in height.
- Leaves are alternate, simple, slender, ovate, 5–10 cm long, dark green in colour, with serrated edges.
- Flowers are pale pink, 3 cm in diameter, 5 petals, maturing white in the spring.
- Fruit is a small, yellowish pome 1.2 cm in diameter, turning reddish in the fall, with birds feeding on them actively.
- Twigs are of moderate thickness with generally many spur shoots, thorns; buds plump ovate. Bark is smooth when young and later scaly.
