Common quince is in the rose or Rosacea family and is native to Armenia, Turkey, Georgia and Iran. It is a small deciduous tree known throughout history for its pear-like fruit which is eaten cooked. It can reach a height of up to 8 m.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, untoothed, broadly elliptic to ovate, up to 11 cm long and 6 cm across, densely pubescent with fine white hairs when young, becoming green on top and downy beneath when mature.
  • The species is monoecious. Flowers are produced in spring after the leaves and are attractive white or pink, 5 cm across, with 5 petals.
  • Fruit is pear-like, yellow, up to 10 cm long, with immature fruit a grey-white pubescence, maturing into a yellow 10 cm long hard fruit not generally suitable to eat uncooked.
