Phellodendron amurense
Amur speciesAmur cork tree is in the citrus or Rutaceae family and is native to eastern Asia, China, Korea and Japan. In parts of North America, it is considered an invasive species. It is used for one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.
- Leaves are opposite, up to 35 cm long, odd-pinnate, with up to 13 ovate leaflets, taper pointed, untoothed and each about 10 cm long and 5 cm across. Leaves turn yellow in the fall.
- Species is dioecious; male and female flowers are small, green and in conical clusters on the separate trees.
- Fruit is rounded, 1 cm across, green in the summer and ripening to black in the fall.
- Bark is thick and corky with notable vertical ridges. Leaf scars are raised, u-shaped and encircle a brown, conical bud.
