Morus nigra

MoraceaeMorus

Black mulberry or blackberry (not the same as blackberries in the Rubus family), is a member of the mulberry or Moraceae family and is native to south Asia. It is a small tree growing up to 12 m tall. It is unique for having 154 base pairs of chromosomes (humans only have 23!).

  • Leaves are generally 10–20 cm long by 6–10 cm broad cm long, downy on the underside.
  • Species is usually dioecious. Flowers are single-sex catkins, males 2–3.5 cm long and females 1–2 cm long.
  • Fruit is dark purple when ripe, 2–3 cm long, a compound cluster of several small drupes; it is richly flavoured, similar to the red mulberry (Morus rubra) but unlike the bland fruit of the white mulberry (Morus alba).
