Morus alba

white species

MoraceaeMorus

White mulberry is a member of the mulberry or Moraceae family and is a small tree native to northern China growing up to 20 m tall.

The species is widely cultivated and naturalized in many places in the world. The white mulberry also is widely cultivated to feed silkworms for the production of silk.

  • Leaves are generally 5–15 cm long, mostly unlobed, (occasional lobes on 1 or both sides), serrated, cordate (unevenly aligned at the base) and tapering to a point.
  • Species is usually dioecious. Flowers are single-sex catkins, males 2–3.5 cm long and females 1–2 cm long.
  • Fruit is a berry (more technically a multiple fruit) 1–2.5 cm long, from white to pink in colour; it is sweet but bland, unlike the red and black mulberries which are more commonly eaten.
