The common pear is in the rose or Rosaceae family and is native to parts of Europe and southwest Asia. It has many cultivars that are widely grown for their fruit in many temperate regions in Europe, North America and Australia.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to elliptic, toothed, up to 10 cm long and 5 cm across, rounded at the base, taper-pointed.
  • Flowers are white, 5 petals, up to 4 cm across.
  • Fruit is rounded to pear-shaped, sweet, edible, yellow-brown to yellow when ripe.
