  • Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate, to 5 cm long and across, shallowly lobed and toothed.
  • English hawthorn is distinguished from the related common hawthorn (C. monogyna) by having leaves being more shallowly lobed, forward-pointing lobes.
  • Flowers are 5 petals, white, 2 cm across, in clusters on ends of twigs.
  • Fruit is rounded to oval, reddish and up to 2 cm.
  • Buds are small, red, round. Branches have 2 cm thorns.
  • Hybrids occur frequently between C. laevigata and C. monogyna (such as 'Paul's Scarlet', 'Rubra Plena'), with pink or red flowers.
