Salix scouleriana
Scouler's speciesScouler's willow is in the willow or Salicaceae family and is native to western North America, extending as far eastward as Manitoba. It grows on muskeg and in open areas on a wide variety of site types.
- Leaves are simple, alternate, obovate, 8–12 cm long and up to 3 cm wide, with widest point towards last third of the leaf; dark green above, lighter green below; sometimes with wavy teeth on the leaf margins; leaves often arranged fan-like at ends of twigs.
- Species is dioecious; flowers appear in spring before the leaves as small catkins 1.5–4.5 cm long.
- Twigs are slender, yellowish-brown to red; buds have single, yellow, then red cap-like bud scales.
- Form can be a shrub or a small tree with a single trunk up to 7 m tall.
