Nothofagus dombeyi

Dombey's species

NothofagaceaeNothofagus

Dombey’s beech is in the southern beech or Nothofagaceae family and is native to southern Chile and the Andean parts of Argentine Patagonia. It sometimes forms mixed forests with monkey-puzzle (Araucaria araucana) trees. It can grow up to 45m tall.

  • Leaves are evergreen, unlike its cousin, Antarctic beech.
  • Leaves are small (2.5–4 cm long and ovate), thick and lustrous dark green, with toothed borders; they have short rounded petioles.
  • Flowers are inconspicuous, with no petals but with 10–20 small reddish-yellow anthers forming clusters.
  • The trunk typically has multiple stems; branchlets and sub-branchlets of branches are arranged distinctly in one plane, somewhat resembling elms in the winter appearance of twigs.
