Chinese hackberry is in the cannabis or Cannabaceae family, is native to China, Korea and Japan and is a naturalized non-invasive species in North America. It is a broad, rounded tree reaching up to 18 m or more and can live up to 1,000 years. Foliage can be either deciduous or semi-evergreen depending on climate.

  • Leaves are simple, alternate, thick and leathery, serrated edges, blunt tipped and up to 15 cm long and 5 cm across, with 2 or 3 leaf veins curving from the base of the leaf to towards the tip.
  • Species is monoecious. Flowering occurs in March–April, and fruiting in September–October.
  • Fruit is a round edible berry (drupe), 5–7 mm in diameter, yellow in summer and ripening to orange and then black.
  • Bark is smooth and dark gray.
