Western catalpa is in the bignonia or Bignoniaceae family and is native to the midwestern United States. It is closely related to southern catalpa, and can be distinguished by:

  • Its flowering panicles bear a smaller number of larger flowers.
  • Seed pods are slightly broader.
  • Leaves tend to be larger than those of C. bignoides, up to 40 cm long and 23 cm across.
