Acer capillipes

Kyushu maple or red snakebark maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to Japan. It is in the snakebark group of maples identified by: Snakeskin-like bark; buds on stocks, 1 pair of scales; flowers (and double samaras) on pendulous racemes.

• Leaves are opposite, simple, somewhat triangular with 3 short lobes, dark green above and paler smooth beneath with serrated edges. They emerge reddish in the spring, borne on prominent red stalks; colour is crimson in mid November.
• Young stems are bright pinkish-red.
• Shape of double samara seeds resembles a coat hanger, like Norway maples.
