Acer capillipes
red snakebark speciesKyushu maple or red snakebark maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to Japan. It is in the snakebark group of maples identified by: Snakeskin-like bark; buds on stocks, 1 pair of scales; flowers (and double samaras) on pendulous racemes.
- Leaves are opposite, simple, somewhat triangular with 3 short lobes, dark green above and paler smooth beneath with serrated edges. They emerge reddish in the spring, borne on prominent red stalks; colour is crimson in mid November.
- Young stems are bright pinkish-red.
- Shape of double samara seeds resembles a coat hanger, like Norway maples.
