Silver maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to eastern and central North America, commonly reaching a height of 25 m with a spread of up to 15 m.

Silver maple is closely related to red maple (A. rubrum) and can hybridize with it (as in Freeman maple (Acer x freemanii).

  • Leaves are opposite, simple and palmately veined, up to 16 cm long and 12 cm broad, being most easily distinguished amongst the maples by its leaf with deep angular notches between the five lobes
  • Flowers are greenish and appear in dense clusters in early spring long before leaves.
  • Winged double samara seeds form a moderately sharp point.
