The sycamore maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to Central Europe and Western Asia but has naturalized in many other parts of Europe and North America and elsewhere, growing to a height of 35 m. Many popular cultivars have been developed of sycamore maple.

  • Leaves are opposite, simple, palmately lobed, 12 cm long and 15 cm across, with 5 coarsely-toothed lobes.
  • The flowers are greenish-yellow and hang in dangling panicles 7–12 cm long.
  • Winged seeds form a double samara about 2.5 cm long, blunt head, 110° of separation, slightly curved inward.
  • Bark often is exfoliating in irregular plates.
