Celtis tournefortii
Oriental speciesThe Oriental hackberry is in the cannabis or Cannabaceae family and is widely distributed in eastern Europe, including Ukraine, Croatia, Greece, Sicily, Montenegro, North Macedonia; in western Asia it is found in Cyprus, northwestern Iran, northern Iraq and Turkey; in the Caucasus region, it is found in Azerbaijan. It is a tree to 20 m tall.
- The mature bark is light grey, rough to smooth, sometimes corky.
- Leaves are deciduous, simple, alternate, ovate, up to 10 cm long, toothed margins, unequal-sided at the base.
- Flowers are in stalkless clusters of brilliant yellow green five-stellate flowers in April.
- Fruit is small, dark orange-colored drupe relished by birds, produced in the late summer.
