Castanopsis fissa is in the beech or Fagaceae family and is native to China ( Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, southern Hunan, southern Jiangxi and SE Yunnan provinces), and northern Thailand and northern Vietnam. It is a medium-sized evergreen tree growing 20–30 m tall.

  • Leaves are spirally arranged, yellowish brown to gray; leaf blade is oblong to obovate-elliptic, very variable in size, often 15–25 cm long and 5–9 cm across, thickly papery, base cuneate, margin from base to middle undulate and crenate, apex acute, acuminate, or rounded; petiole is 1–2.5 cm long.
  • Flowers are in upright catkins 10–17 cm long, with white flowers, developing in April to June.
  • Nut is globose to elliptic, 1.3–1.8 cm long and 1.1–1.6 cm wide, apically brown-red, tomentosa,, developing from October to December.
