Acer cappadocicum

Cappadocian species

SapindaceaeAcer

Cappadocian maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to Asia, from central Turkey to the Himalayas and southwestern China, growing up to 30 m tall.

  • Leaves are opposite, simple, palmate, 5-7 lobed with shallow sinuses (channels separating the veins), toothless edges; they turn yellow in the fall.
  • Winged seeds form a double samara with a rounded head, wings at about a 110° angle, straight sides.
  • Flowers are small and yellow, on separate stems, forming clusters.
  • Leaf stems exude a milky sap when broken, like leaves of Norway maple.
