Field maple or hedge maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to much of Europe, but has been planted extensively outside its native range including in many cities in North America. It can grow up to 15 m tall and 1 m in diameter.

There are over 30 known cultivars of field maple.

  • Leaves are opposite, simple and variable sized, with 3–5 blunt rounded lobes with smooth margins.
  • Flowers are yellow-green, small, in upright clusters in spring.
  • Seeds form double samara, aligned at 180°, 2.5–4.0 cm long, often grouped in parallel in close clusters.
  • Bark is sometimes corky.
