Drimys winteri
winter's bark speciesWinter’s bark of canelo is a small tree in the Winteraceae family. It is native to the Magellanic and Valdivian temperate rain forests of Chile and Argentina, which have cold and moist climates. It grows up to 7.5 m tall.
- Leaves are evergreen, simple, alternate, leathery, elliptical to oblong-lanceolate, 3–18 cm long and 1–8 cm across, margin smooth, color green above and whitish below; l;eaves have a peppery odor when crushed.
- Flowers are in clusters of up to 10 flowers, and are white with a yellow center, and consist of a 5–7 petals with red sepals, blooming in late winter or early spring.
- Fruit is a bluish berry which eventually turns black.
