Tasmannia lanceolata
Tasmanian speciesThe Tasmanian pepperberry or mountain pepper is a small tree in the Winteraceae family. It is native to the woodlands and cool temperate rainforest of south-eastern Australia, growing from 2–10 m in height.
- Tree is a compact, rounded shrub for landscaping, 2.5–3.5 m tall and 4–8 ft wide; stems are bright red to purple-red in colour.
- Leaves are simple, alternate or sub-opposite, lanceolate to narrow-elliptic or oblanceolate, 4–12 cm long, and 0.7–2.0 cm wide, dark green with a distinctly pale undersurface.
- Plants are dioecious; flowers are in terminal clusters, are small, cream or white in color, with 3-8 petals, appearing in spring or early summer; male flowers are pale brown to flesh colored and have 20–25 stamens.
- Berries are globose, red, two-lobed, 5–8 mm wide, turning black by autumn.
