This chengiopanax tree is a deciduous tree in the ivy or Araliaceae family, native to Japan, where is is called koshiabura. It is deciduous and non-spiny.

It is used in tempura as well as a variety of other dishes.

  • Leaves are palmately compound, borne on both long and short shoots, leaflets being 3–7 cm long, margin minutely serrulate.
  • Flowers are produced in large numbers in late summer, each flower small and white.
  • Fruit is a drupe, laterally compressed, globose, with 2 seeds.
