Mahonia nervosa
dwarf Oregon grape speciesTall Oregon grape is in the barberry or Berberidaceae family and is native to western North America, from southern British Columbia to central California, with an isolated population in northern Idaho.
- It is an evergreen shrub with short vertical stems, mostly under 30 cm tall, growing rarely up to 2 m.
- Leaves are pinnate and up to 30 cm long, with 9–19 leaflets, which are spiny and leathery and resemble those of holly; leaves are somewhat shiny, but less so than tall Oregon-grape, and leaflets do not have a single central vein as in that species, but several veins arranged fan-like, branched from the leaflet base, hence the epithet "nervosa".
- Flowers are yellow and in dense clusters in early spring.
- Berries are oval, dark dusty blue to bluish-black, giving rise to the common name “Oregon grape”.
