Berberis kawakamii is in the barberry or Berberidaceae family and is a native of Taiwan in China.

  • It is an evergreen, glabrous shrub growing to 2.5 m tall and wide. Shoots are strongly ribbed or angled, pale brown, with spines three-parted, 1.2–2.5 cm long.
  • Leaves oval to narrowly oval, tapered to both ends, 2.5–5.0 cm long and 0.6–2.0 cm across, fringed with small, sharp teeth, veins conspicuous, grey-green colour.
  • Flowers are rich yellow, 8 mm across, crowded in axillary, compact clusters of 8–12, each with 5–6 petals, notched at the rounded apex, giving the flowers a globose shape through being more or less concave; sepals very narrow, red at the back; stalks are 6 mm long; flowers open in late March and April.
  • Fruit is oval, about 6 mm long, dark blue.
