Cretan barberry is a deciduous, sometimes prostrate shrub in the barberry or Berberidaceae family and is native to the mountains of Crete and other islands of the Mediterranean.

  • Stems are heavily armed with three-forked spines, each fork 13–22 cm long. The leaves, spines, and flowers form a dense, crowded mass along the branches.
  • Leaves are small, obovate, pointed, appprox. 1.3 cm long, mostly without teeth.
  • Flowers are yellow and in small clusters.
  • Berries are globose drupes, nearly black, with a bloom.
