Aralia bipinnata is in the ivy or Araliaceae family and is native to China (Taiwan), Indonesia (Irian Jaya), Japan, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. It is a shrub or treelet growing 2.7–7 m tall.

  • Branches are straight, with conic prickles 4–8 mm long.
  • Leaves are 2-pinnately compound (with a pair of accessory leaflets at each division of rachis), with 5–11 leaflets, each ovate to lanceolate, 3.5–15 cm long and 1.5–6.5 cm across, papery to leathery, both surfaces glabrous, underside glaucous, with 6–8 pairs of distinct secondary veins; leaf base is rounded, tip pointed, petiole up to 40 cm long and prickly.
  • Flowers are in a terminal panicle of umbels of bisexual flowers and 1 to several lateral umbels of male flowers; bracts are persistent, lanceolate to triangular, up to 4 mm long; umbels are 10–25-flowered.
  • Fruit is globose, 3 mm in diameter, radiating. Flowering and fruiting takes place throughout the whole year.
