The rosy trumpet tree is in the bignonia or Bignoniaceae family and is distributed from southern México, to Venezuela and Ecuador. It is the national tree of El Salvador; it is commonly planted in parks and gardens and can reach up to 30 m tall.

  • Leaves are compound, digitate and deciduous, each leaf having 5 leaflets of variable size and the middle one being the largest.
  • Flowers are large, in various tones of pink to purple, and appear while the tree has very few leaves; flowering occurs mostly in January and February, and is generally associated with dry periods, although it also has been observed in August, September, April and May.
  • Fruit is a long, slender capsule measuring up to 35 cm long and appearing from February through April.
