Chinese photinia is in the rose or Rosaceae family and is a shrub native to western Hubei province in China. It grows 1.8–6 m tall with a spreading habit.

  • Young shoots are reddish, appressed-downy; buds are minute; branches are short, somewhat spiny.
  • Leaves are evergreen, simple, alternate, elliptic-ovate, finely-toothed, leathery, 5–13 cm long and 2–4 cm across, lustrous dark green, petiole is grooved, 6–1.2 cm long.
  • Flowers are numerous, in terminal corymbs 7.5–10 cm across; each flower is 1.2 cm wide, white; petals are roundish, spreading; calyx-tube funnel-shaped, with triangular lobes, downy like the flower-stalks.
  • Fruit is roundish, orange-red, glabrous, about 8 mm across.
