Japanese climbing hydrangea is a member of the Hydrangeaceae family and is native to the woodlands of the Himalayas, southern and central China and northern Myanmar.

  • Stems are reddish brown, of interest in winter; buds are red-brown, pubescent with overlapping scales, 3 mm long.
  • Leaves are deciduous, opposite, simple, nearly round, coarsely serrate to dentate margins, blue-green, leaves 7.5–12 cm long; foliage turns yellow in the fall.
  • Flowers are showy, creamy white, in drooping corymbs 20–25 cm long; the outer flowers being sterile and showy, are composed of a single petaloid sepal (there are 4 petaloid sepals in Hydrangea anoma petiolaris); the inner flowers are small, dull white, flowering July-August, slightly later than H. petiolaris.
