Tilia tomentosa
silver speciesThe silver linden or silver lime is in the mallow or Malvaceae family and is native to southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, from Romania and the Balkans east to western Turkey. It is a large tree that can grow to 35 m tall, with a domed habit.
- Leaves are alternately arranged, rounded to triangular-ovate, 4–13 cm long and broad with a 2.5–4 cm petiole, green and mostly hairless above, densely white tomentose with white hairs below, and with a coarsely toothed margin.
- Leaf-like floral bracts on the flower stocks are 5–11.5 cm long and 1.1–2.2 cm broad, white-felted on one side. Flowers are pale yellow, hermaphroditic (both male and female), produced in cymes of 3-10 in mid to late summer.
- Fruit is a round nut-like drupe 8–10 mm long, downy, and slightly ribbed.
