The birchleaf viburnum is a shrub in the moschatel or Adoxaceae family native of western and central China, and growing to 5 m in height.

  • Bark is light brown, branchlets of current year purple-brownish, glabrous or yellow-brownish; winter buds are ovoid-oblong, with 2 pairs of separate scales.
  • Leaves are simple, deciduous, opposite, 4–9 cm long and 3.5– 5 cm across, ovate to rhombic-ovate, broadly wedge-shaped, the terminal part more gradually tapered and coarsely toothed; dark green and glabrous above, paler and also glabrous beneath; petiole is 1.3–2 cm long, often slightly hairy.
  • Flowers are white, 5 mm across, all perfect; stamens are protruding, anthers yellow; flowers are in cymes 3–10 cm across, with 7–8 main branches, flower-stalks often covered with a close, pale brown hairs.
  • Fruit is red, roundish, 6 mm long, in heavy clusters.
