Sambucus mexicana
Mexican speciesThe Mexican elderberry is in the moschatel or Adoxaceae family, that is native to North America. It is a small tree up to 7 m tall, and a spread of up to 10 m.
- Leaves are semi-evergreen, thick, leathery, pinnately compound, leaflets are in 3–5 pairs, narrowly elliptic to narrowly ovate or lanceolate, 4–14 cm long and 1.5–3 cm across, base obtuse and oblique, margin serrate, apex acuminate; flowering is from May to July.
- Flowers are small, yellow/white, in terminal cymes 10–20 cm broad and tall, from April to June.
- Fruit is blue-black, although have a whitish waxy coating, is 3–4 mm in diameter, ripening in September-October.
