Sambucus adnata
East Himalayan speciesThe East Himalayan elderberry is a plant in the moschatel or Adoxaceae family, that is native to China, Bhutan and India (Darjeeling, Sikkim). It is a shrub 1-2 m tall.
- Stem is herbaceous, obviously striate; pith is white or red.
- Leaves are imparipinnate (pinnate with a single leaf at the apex), leaflets are in 3–5 pairs, narrowly elliptic to narrowly ovate or lanceolate, 4–15 cm long and 1.5–2.5 cm across, base obtuse and oblique, margin serrate, apex acuminate; flowering is from May to July.
- Flowers are small, white, in terminal cymes 12–15 cm broad and tall, from May to July.
- Fruit is orange or red, globose, 3–4 mm in diameter, becoming black on drying, ripening in September-October.
