- Smaller stems are soft with a pithy center.
- Leaves are pinnately compound, leaflets are in 5–7 pairs, narrowly elliptic to narrowly ovate or lanceolate, 5–15 cm long and 1.5–2 cm across, base obtuse and oblique, margin irregularly serrated, apex acuminate; flowering is from May to July.
- Flowers are small, white, cream or yellowish, each flower with small, recurved petals and a star-shaped axis of 5 white stamens tipped in yellow anthers; flowers are in terminal cymes 12–15 cm broad and tall, from May to July.
- Fruit is red or purple, globose, 3–4 mm in diameter, containing 3-5 seeds, ripening in late summer to early fall.
