East Asian beautyberry is a member of the mint or Lamiaceae family and is native to China. It is a deciduous shrub up to 2 m tall.

  • Leaves are narrowly linear-lanceolate, or lanceolate, green, 15–26 cm long and 3-5 cm across, base is cuneate, tip is pointed, veins are in 12-15 pairs, petiole is 5–8 mm long; leaves turn yellow in fall.
  • Flowers are small, have a whitish or purplish corolla, in cymes 3–5-branched, many flowered, 2–3 cm across; flowering is in June-July.
  • Berries are small drupes about 3 mm in diameter, light purple in colour, attractive for growing closely together in large clusters, hitting their peak in September-October and dropping in early winter. They are not very edible to wildlife.
