The black chokeberry is a shrub in the rose or Rosaceae family native to eastern North America, from Canada to the central United States, from Newfoundland west to Ontario and Minnesota, and south as far as Arkansas, Alabama, and Georgia.

  • It is a branching shrub, leaves alternate, simple, glossy dark green and oblanceolate with crenate margins and pinnate venation, turning a red color in the autumn.
  • Flowers are small, white or pink, with 5 petals and 5 sepals, produced in corymbs of 10–25 together.
  • Fruit is a small pome, with an astringent flavor, often used for jam, juice, wine and so on.
