Japanese wintersweet or Japanese allspice is in the sweetshrub or Calycanthaceae family and is native to China. It is a shrub growing to 4 m tall.

  • Leaves are deciduous, rough, glossy green, simple, opposite, elliptic-ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 5–29 cm long and 2–12 cm broad, emerging in spring, and turning yellow in fall.
  • Flowers are pendant, strongly scented, up to 3.5 cm across and have 15–21 yellow or pale green-yellow tepals, with a purplish-brown center, the inner ones usually with purplish red pigments, flowering on bare stems in the winter between November and March.
  • The fruit is an elliptic, greenish yellow capsule 3–4 cm long, drying to brown.
