The Mediterranean hackberry or the European nettle tree is a medium-sized tree native to the Korean Peninsula and parts of China. It can grow up to 15 m in height.

  • Branching is upright-arching with a rounded spreading crown.
  • Leaves are deciduous, simple, alternate, 5–15 cm long and 3–7 cm wide, obliquely ovate or ovate-lanciolate, broadly tapered or rounde, toothed at the sides and more coarsely toothed at the tip, with the midrib often elongating into a slender, awl-shaped lobe, strongly and longitudinally veined beneath, downy on the veins, leaf veins curving gradually toward tip of the leaf; leaves turn pale yellow in the fall.
  • Tree is monoecious; flowers are inconspicuous, unisexual or bi-sexual, appearing in April-May.
  • Fruit roundish oval, nearly 1.3 cm long, dull orange, on a stalk 1.5–1.8 cm long.
