The Mediterranean hackberry or the European nettle tree is a medium-sized tree native to southern Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. It can grow up to 25 m in height.

  • Branching is upright-arching with a rounded spreading crown.
  • Leaves are deciduous, simple, alternate, obliquely ovate or ovate-lanciolate, 5–15 cm long, asymmetrical at the base, sharp-toothed, tapering to a long point, leaf veins curving gradually toward tip of the leaf; leaves turn pale yellow in the fall.
  • Tree is monoecious; flowers are inconspicuous, unisexual or bi-sexual, appearing in April-May.
  • Fruit is a small dark purple, berry-like drupe 1 cm in diameter and edible.
