- It is an evergreen, thorny shrub growing to 2.5 m tall, with a loose, spreading habit; branchlets are glossy, glabrous, brown, sometime with simple or 3-parted spines up to 2.5 cm long.
- Leaves are grey-green, broadly ovate or oval, rounded at the apex, 2.5–3.7 cm long, tapering at the base; margins sometimes have fine teeth; stock is reddish, 2–2.5 cm long.
- Flowers are long-stocked, drooping, yellow or orange-yellow, 3 often from 1 tuft of leaves, opening in May.
- Fruit is oblong or egg-shaped, 8 mm long, black, covered with blue bloom, ripening in summer.
