Chinese evergreen oak is, and is in the beech or Fagaceae family, and in the ring-cupped oak group of eastern and southeastern Asia. It is native to east central and southeast China, Japan, Korea, Laos, northern Thailand and Vietnam. It can reach 20 m in height.

  • Leaves are evergreen, simple, lanceolate to elliptical 6–11 cm long and 1.8–4 cm across, with serrulate margins; apex is long-acuminate, base rounded, leaf leathery, shiny green above (new leaves purple-bronze); petiole 1-2 cm long.
  • Fruit is an acorn 1.4–2.5 cm long and 1.0–1.5 cm across, ovoid to ellipsoid, and glabrous with a rounded apex; cap has 3–6 concentric rings; acorns ripen in late fall.
