Tapiscia sinensis is in the Tapisciaceae family and is native to central China. It is a deciduous tree, growing up to 12 m tall.

  • Bark is gray to grayish black, twigs are glabrous, buds ovate.
  • Leaves are odd-pinnate, up to 40 cm long, with 5–9 pairs of leaflets, each ovate, heart-shaped at the base, pointed, toothed, 6–14 cm long and 3.5–6 cm across, greyish beneath.
  • Flowers are honey-scented, male or bisexual, small (2 mm in diameter), in axillary panicles; those bearing the male flowers are composed of many slender spikes 15–25 cm long, the fertile panicles shorter and more stoutly branched, with larger flowers; flowering is from March to May.
  • Fruit is egg-shaped, originally reddish brown, turning black, 1–1.8 cm long and with a thick peduncle, produced in May-June.
