Chinese species

CalycanthaceaeCalycanthus

Chinese sweetshrub is in the Calycanthaceae family and is native to eastern China, being closely related to the U.S. native, Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus). It is a large, upright-rounded, densely branched, deciduous shrub growing from 2–3 m tall, with an equal or slightly greater spread.

  • Leaves are glossy, medium green and up to 15 cm long, turning yellow in fall.
  • Flowers are camellia-like, 10 cm in diameter, with white or blush-pink outer tepals, yellow inner tepals with maroon markings and a mounded ring of yellow stamens near the shoot ends, for a month or more in mid to late spring. Unlike Carolina allspice, its flowers have no fragrance.
