Lonicera etrusca
Etruscan speciesThe Etruscan honeysuckle is in the honeysuckle or Caprifoliaceae family and is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, although it is known elsewhere, such as in the Pacific Northwest where it has escaped cultivation.
- It is a deciduous or semi-deciduous perennial climber which reaches length of 6 m.
- Leaves are opposite, simple, oval or obovate, and about 2–5 cm long, and with dense spikes of flowers which have pairs of fused leaves at the base; lower leaves are shortly stalked; approaching the top they become stalkless; uppermost pairs are united at the base (connate).
- Flowers are fragrant, at first yellowish, suffused with red, becoming deeper yellow with age; flowering is from July onwards in terminal and axillary groups of three long-stalked heads. Corolla is 4 cm long, the tube slender, sometimes glabrous, sometimes glandular, conspicuously two-lipped.
