The hairy manzanita is in the heath or Ericaceae and is native to the western coastal areas of North America, from southwestern British Columbia to California. It is a shrub or small tree, usually 1–5 meters tall.

  • Leaves are oval-shaped, 2–6 cm long and 2–3 cm wide, pale bluish green, fuzzy on both surfaces and occasionally glandular.
  • Flower is small, white, urn-shaped and borne in bunches.
  • Fruit is a red drupe about a centimeter in diameter.
