The coast silk tassle is in the silk tassle or Garryaceae family, native to the coastal ranges of California and Oregon in United States.

It is an evergreen shrub growing to 2–5 m tall, with a close to spherical form.

  • Leaves are simple, opposite, and are leathery, glossy green on top and to gray-green underneath, ovate, 3–15 cm long, with an entire margin (no teeth) and a short petiole.
  • Plants are dioecious; flowers are gray-green catkins, short and spreading when first produced in late summer; the male catkins becoming long and pendulous 3–20 cm long in late winter when shedding pollen; the female catkins usually a little shorter and less pendulous.
  • Fruit is a round dry berry containing two seeds.
