Betula nana
dwarf speciesDwarf birch is a member of the birch or Betulaceae family and is found mainly on the tundra in Arctic regions in Greenland, Iceland, northern Europe, northern Asia and northern North America. It is a shrub growing up to 1–1.2 m tall.
- Bark is non-peeling and shiny red-copper colored, with abundant lenticels.
- Leaf is rounded, 6–20 mm in diameter, leathery, with a bluntly toothed margin, darker green on the upper surface; leaf growth occurs after snow melt, with leaves becoming red in the autumn.
- Plant is monoecious; females are erect catkins 5–15 mm long and 4–10 mm across.
