Calycanthus x raulstonii

hybrid species

CalycanthaceaeCalycanthus

This hybrid sweetshrub is in the Calycanthaceae family and was developed at North Carolina State University, in North Carolina, USA, as a cross between Carolinea allspice (Calycanthus floridus) and Chinese allspice (Calycanthus chinensis). It is known as Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Heritage Wine’

The first of the hybrid sweetshrubs, it has stood the test of time. The plant is very popular in the trade for the 5–10 cm wine-red flowers that open in mid-spring, larger than the native American plant but without any fragrance.

Leaves are intermediate between the two parents.
