Weigela florida is in the honeysuckle or Caprifoliaceae family and is native to northern China, Korea and Japan.

  • The plant is a deciduous shrub growing up to 3 m tall, spreading to up to 3.8 m wide, with coarse branching; branches on mature shrubs tend to arch toward the ground.
  • Leaves are elliptic to obovate, to 12 cm long, medium green, with serrate margins; fall colour does not stand out.
  • Flowers are funnel-shaped, rose-pink, 3 cm long, blooming profusely in spring, with a less prolific bloom again often occurring in mid to late summer. Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds.
